What Does Therapy Involve?

We offer therapy to individuals, couples and families. We use evidence-based therapies, delivered by highly trained healthcare professionals who are experienced in a range of specialities, such as CBT and EMDR. Where children are concerned, we will often incorporate family members into the therapeutic work, offering family-based therapy or parenting help as required. Therapy for younger children will usually include creative techniques, for example, drawing exercises, games and stories.

Our therapy is ‘active’. Based on one or more evidence-based models; sessions are semi-structured and have specific goals and direction (it is not just a supportive counselling environment). Our team of clinicians, including psychologists and psychotherapists, are trained in several different therapies, meaning their practice is highly integrative and that clients receive a bespoke approach. They are skilled in ‘systemic’ intervention as well as individual therapies, meaning that they can work with organisations (such as schools) in order that the ‘system’ around an individual supports therapeutic change.

Therapy Glossary

With all the different therapy types that clincians practise, it can get quite confusing. With that in mind, we have produced a handy glossary.

Your Treatment Journey

After receiving your enquiry, clients are matched to a member of our clinical team based on the information you have given us and the clinician’s experience and expertise. Where possible, clients will stay with the same clinician throughout their course of therapy.

Prior to the commencement of therapy, all clients undergo an initial assessment in order to establish which type (or types) of therapy they require and the likely duration of the treatment. In most cases, this initial assessment will be one appointment lasting 1.5 hours*. During the initial assessment, the clinician will explore the nature of the presenting difficulties and provide their analysis of the likely causal and maintaining factors to the problem. Based on this, they will make a recommendation of the best approach, including any particular therapeutic model that might be best suited to the difficulties. A plan for therapy is usually discussed at the end of the session – written reports are not provided as standard (these can be requested at additional cost if required).

Following the initial assessment, clients will usually proceed to regular therapy sessions lasting 1 hour each. In respect to adults and older children, our therapy service usually requires a weekly commitment, as this facilitates better progress and outcomes. However, sometimes other arrangements are available on request. Families accessing help for emotional and behavioural difficulties for younger children may require less regular interventions.

The goals and outcomes of therapy for each client will vary. The general aim of psychological therapy is for issues to be understood, life events to be processed, and problems to be overcome. Sometimes, after a course of therapy, our clients will return to us some time later for further help- perhaps for a ‘top up’ or therapy or to address new issues. Knowing that we are here to help should they need us again provides the reassurance and continuity of care that clients deserve.

*Some people with more complex difficulties may require in-depth Psychology assessment, which is a separate service and subject to additional fees click here to read about in-depth assessments.
