FAQ - Talking Therapy

Find answers to our most common questions below. Just click a topic to expand it.

What is talking therapy, and how does it help mental health?

While often referred to as ‘talking therapy,’ our approach goes beyond general counselling. Led by qualified psychologists, we provide evidence-based psychological interventions. This means we don’t just offer a safe space to talk; we use clinical expertise to help you understand the root causes of your thoughts and behaviours.

We apply scientifically backed frameworks to treat conditions like anxiety, trauma, and depression, equipping you with sophisticated coping strategies and deep emotional resilience.

Can talking therapy help with depression and low mood?

Yes. Therapy provides a supportive space to explore the underlying causes of depression and develop practical strategies to improve mood, motivation, and self-esteem. Evidence-based approaches such as CBT and Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) are commonly used. However, all interventions are bespoke. The specific therapy type/s are determined by your individual needs and clinical presentation.

What’s the difference between counsellors, therapists, psychologists and psychotherapists?

Counsellor and therapist are umbrella terms for professionals offering emotional support, though training levels vary.

Practitioner Psychologists (Clinical, Counselling, Educational and Forensic Psychologists) hold legally protected titles.
They:

  • Are HCPC-registered
  • Have completed a minimum of six years of specialist postgraduate training
  • Are qualified in assessment, formulation, diagnosis, and evidence-based therapy

Our psychotherapists are also highly trained and registered with recognised bodies such as the BABCP for CBT therapists.

How can talking therapy support trauma recovery and PTSD?

Therapies like Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR)and trauma-focused CBT are specifically designed to process traumatic experiences safely. They help reduce distressing memories, improve emotional regulation, and support long-term recovery. If EMDR is determined to be a helpful therapeutic approach, you may wish to have regular sessions (e.g. weekly). However, we may also offer Intenstive EMDR Therapy, but we understand that this may not be suitable for everyone.

Please note that all interventions are bespoke – the specific therapy type/s are determined by your individual needs and clinical presentation.

Is talking therapy effective for relationship and family difficulties?

Yes. Therapies such as systemic family therapy or relationship-focused psychotherapy help improve communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen emotional bonds. Individuals and families learn strategies to manage challenges and build healthier relationships.

Do you offer Child Psychology?

Yes. We have specialist Child Psychologists and Child Psychotherapists who support children and young people with:

  • Anxiety, OCD and phobias
  • Low mood or low self-esteem
  • Emotional regulation difficulties
  • Behavioural challenges
  • Eating difficulties

Support can be provided one-to-one with the child, through joint sessions with parents, or through dedicated parenting support.

We also offer autism and sensory assessments, delivered by Psychologists and Occupational Therapists experienced in neurodevelopmental work.

Are your psychologists at Purple House fully registered?

Yes. All of our practitioner psychologists – including Clinical, Counselling, Forensic and Educational Psychologists – are HCPC registered.

Our Psychotherapists and Occupational Therapists are also registered with their respective professional bodies, ensuring the highest standards of clinical practice.

Can talking therapy support people with social or communication difficulties?

Yes. Talking therapy provides tools for understanding emotions, managing anxiety, and building social confidence. When combined with autism assessments, speech and language therapy, or occupational therapy, talking therapy can help individuals develop practical strategies to navigate social situations and communicate more effectively.
