The term 'Creative Therapies' is used to describe a wide variety of creative methods aimed at helping a person's emotional difficulties. Methods include; drawing, sand play, clay, story telling, and the use of puppets/dolls. These methods are primarily used with children, but not exclusively! Creative methods may be used as the main form of therapy, or they may be integrated with more traditional 'talking' therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR), Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP), or Schema Therapy.
What Situations Can Creative Therapies Help With?
Creative Therapies can be used to help any type of difficulty, e.g. Depression, Anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress, or Attachment difficulties. There can be many benefits of the use of creative therapies over more traditional talking therapies. Creative Therapies help connect with a children at a more age appropriate level. They can also make therapy more fun and less stressful, particularly for young children. They place less emphasis on the use of language, which is helpful when children (or adults) do not have the words to describe their feelings or to describe past events. The use of metaphor in many creative methods of therapy can also be extremely helpful in connecting a child to their emotional difficulties, without causing too much shame. Further, creative methods can help connect a person to difficulties which may not be in their conscious mind, and therefore more difficult to reach through talking.
